Once the workshop of the world, Birmingham is experiencing a 21st century renaissance to rival its past prowess as the city of a thousand trades. Locals argue it never really went away. Of the 4,000 inventions made in the UK every year, 2,800 come from Birmingham. Which tells you a lot about the city and its character.
